Lawmaker says the PA state budget is still not complete
HARRISBURG – Rep. Valerie Gaydos (R-Allegheny) today issued the following statement in response to the House hurriedly pushing through a non-negotiable Tax Code Bill:
“While there are some positive parts of this legislation, this is not a negotiated bill where all sides came to an agreement. Instead, we are rewarding certain segments of the population at the cost of others. This includes giving special privileges for marijuana growers, the city of Reading and the movie industry. I do not support big corporate tax giveaways, especially when small businesses are still struggling and recovering from the trauma that government imposed on them during the 2020 COVID shutdowns. People are still trying to make ends meet as inflation is eroding their buying power. I urge all parties to come back to the table to negotiate a bill that meets the needs of all Pennsylvanians. Government should not be picking winners and losers.
“I along with my House Republicans colleagues have been focused on lowering costs for Pennsylvanians, strengthening the economy, providing safe communities, and creating a child-first and family-focused educational experience.
“This legislation is an irresponsible way to manage state finances. Lobbing code bills between chambers will not complete the state budget process, but only extend the impasse, further jeopardizing hospitals, 911 centers, tobacco settlement funding, community college funding increases and mass transit systems.”
Despite Gaydos’ “no” vote,
House Bill 1219 passed the House of Representatives 102-101 and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
